From the hemp shop to the alleyway!

In 2007, cannabis was obtained increasingly from friends or in alleyways from dealers.

The danger of mixing with other drug markets (eg, cocaine) can not be excluded.

A comparison of the sources of supply of cannabis for adolescents and young adults between 2004 and 2007

The article axamines the question of where adolescents and young adults obtain cannabis in Switzerland, and what has changed in the last few years in this respect.

The Swiss Cannabis Monitoring data were analysed. These contain a representative population study of adolescents and young adults resident in Switzerland aged from 13 to 29 years. As part of this study 5,025 adolescents and young adults were questioned in telephone interviews on the topic of cannabis in 2004. A second survey took place three years later.

According to Cannabis Monitoring, 11.2% of all adolescents and young adults in Switzerland currently use cannabis, i.e. they had taken cannabis within the six months before the interview (2007). The majority obtain their cannabis from friends. While over one fifth of cannabis users stated in 2004 that they bought their cannabis from the hemp shop, this proportion was only very low three years later. In 2007, cannabis was obtained increasingly from friends or in alleyways from dealers. Male cannabis users, particularly frequent young adult users, especially have moved into the alleyways.
